Market Intermediaries
Between you and the stock exchange, there's a whole ecosystem of intermediaries making your trades possible.
You never directly interact with the stock exchange. Multiple entities work behind the scenes to ensure your orders are executed safely and settlement happens smoothly.
The Key Players
1. Stockbrokers
Your gateway to the markets. Brokers execute trades on your behalf and are registered with SEBI.
Types of brokers:
- Full-service brokers – Research, advisory, portfolio management
- Discount brokers – Low-cost, execution-only (like Zerodha, Upstox)
When choosing a broker, consider: brokerage charges, platform usability, research quality, and customer support. For beginners, a clean interface matters more than advanced features.
2. Depositories
They hold your shares in electronic form. Think of them as "banks for your shares."
- NSDL – National Securities Depository Limited
- CDSL – Central Depository Services Limited
Your Demat account is held with one of these. Without a demat account, you cannot hold shares.
3. Depository Participants (DPs)
The intermediaries between you and the depository. Your broker usually acts as your DP.

Where are your shares held electronically?
Always ensure you have login access to your Demat account independently of your broker. Your shares belong to YOU, not your broker.
