Understanding Quotes

Every stock has a quote – a snapshot of its current trading information. Learning to read quotes is essential for making informed decisions.

📝Note

A stock quote shows you everything you need to know about a stock's current trading status at a glance.

Anatomy of a Stock Quote

Here's what you'll typically see when you look up a stock:

FieldExampleMeaning
SymbolRELIANCEStock's trading code
LTP₹2,450.75Last Traded Price
Change+15.25 (+0.63%)Today's movement
Open₹2,438.00First trade price of the day
High₹2,468.50Highest price today
Low₹2,432.10Lowest price today
Close₹2,435.50Previous day's closing price
Volume12,45,000Shares traded today

LTP: Last Traded Price

The LTP is the price at which the most recent trade occurred. It's not exactly what you'll pay – it's what someone just paid.

Important

LTP updates in real-time during market hours. The price you see might differ from what you get when your order executes.

Open, High, Low, Close (OHLC)

These four prices tell the story of the trading day:

  • Open – Where the stock started the day
  • High – The best moment for sellers
  • Low – The best moment for buyers
  • Close – Where it ended (previous day)

Together, they form the basis of all price charts.

Understanding Change

The change shows how the stock has moved since yesterday:

  • Positive (+) = Price is up, shown in green
  • Negative (-) = Price is down, shown in red
  • Percentage = More useful for comparison across stocks

A ₹10 move on a ₹100 stock (10%) is more significant than ₹10 on a ₹2,000 stock (0.5%).

52-Week High and Low

This shows the stock's range over the past year:

MetricWhat It Tells You
Near 52W HighStock is at strong levels, possibly expensive
Near 52W LowStock is at weak levels, possibly a bargain or troubled
💡Tip

Don't buy just because a stock is at 52-week low. It might be low for good reasons. Similarly, stocks at highs can go higher.

Previous Close vs LTP

  • Previous Close = Closing price of the last trading day
  • LTP = Current price

The difference is today's gain or loss.

Real-Time vs Delayed Quotes

For actual trading, always use real-time quotes from your broker's platform.

Reading the Quote Quickly

When you first look at a stock, focus on:

  1. LTP – Current price
  2. % Change – Is it up or down today?
  3. Volume – Is there interest in this stock?
  4. 52W Range – Where is it in its yearly range?

This gives you a quick sense of what's happening.

Key Takeaways

  • LTP is the most recent trade price, not guaranteed execution price
  • OHLC tells the story of the trading day
  • Percentage change is more meaningful than absolute change
  • Always use real-time quotes from your broker for trading
