Applying for IPOs
Applying for an IPO has evolved from filling physical forms to a 2-click process. However, the strategy for getting an allotment remains a game of probability.
Investor Categories
You must choose a "bucket" to apply in. Each has a reserved quota.
1. Retail Individual Investor (RII)
- Who: General public.
- Limit: Investment up to ₹2 Lakhs.
- Quota: 35% of the total issue (usually).
- Allotment Logic: Lottery System.
- If oversubscribed, 1 lot is given to lucky winners. Applying for ₹2 Lakhs (max bid) does not increase your chance of winning.
- Strategy: Apply for 1 Lot only. Use multiple Demat accounts of family members (PAN cards) to increase probability.
2. High Net-worth Individual (HNI / NII)
- Who: Individuals investing > ₹2 Lakhs.
- Quota: 15%.
- Small HNI (sHNI): ₹2L to ₹10L.
- Big HNI (bHNI): > ₹10L.
- Allotment Logic: Pro-rata (Proportional).
- If subscribed 100x, you need to apply for 100 lots to get 1 lot guaranteed.
- Strategy: Requires massive capital funding (IPO Financing). Not recommended for beginners.
3. Qualified Institutional Buyer (QIB)
- Who: Mutual Funds, Banks, FIIs.
- Quota: 50%.
- Significance: If QIBs are not buying, stay away. They are the "Smart Money".
The Application Process (UPI + ASBA)
- Login to Zerodha/Upstox/Groww.
- Select IPO -> Apply.
- Important: Always check the "Cut-off Price" checkbox.
- IPOs have a price band (e.g., ₹100 - ₹108).
- If you bid at ₹100 and the final price is ₹108, your application is rejected instantly.
- Cut-off ensures you bid at the final decided price.
- Enter UPI ID and submit.
- CRITICAL: Open your UPI App (Gpay/PhonePe) and Approve the Mandate. Without this, your application is incomplete.
Timelines
- Day 1-3: Bidding Window. (Tip: Apply on Day 2 or 3 after checking QIB subscription data).
- Day 6: Finalization of Basis of Allotment (Check status on registrar websites like Link Intime/Kfintech).
- Day 8: Listing on NSE/BSE.
| Category | Investment | Alloc Logic | Best Strategy |
